Hello All GPG members (25th March 2024),
Now that the Monthly Competition series has ended I would like to share with you some details of remaining competitions that conclude on the presentation evening, particularly the Print and PDI of the Year as this is one that people sometimes get wrong. Also Chairman’s Cup as this is one people often forget about.
Full details of these are in the Rules document I sent out in December, but I just thought a little reminder might help.
Print of the Year and PDI of the Year.
As for Monthly Competitions, you can enter a maximum of two PDIs and two Prints.
All entries MUST have been entered in a Monthly Competition this season (no new images).
Images must not be re-edited or otherwise changed, they must be exactly as entered in the Monthly Competition they were originally entered in.
No crossovers; images must be entered in the same section as they were entered in the Monthly Competition, so if you entered it as a print, you need to enter it in Print of the Year and if you entered it as a PDI it must be entered in PDI of the Year (if you can’t remember, talk to me, I keep records).
Sizing, file naming and print mounting rules are exactly as for Monthly Competitions (no wider than 1920 pixels, no higher than 1080 pixels, prints mounted in a 50 cm x 40 cm mount).
Closing date for entries is the night of the AGM, (9th May 2024)
Correct procedure is to let me have your entries in the usual way as for Monthly Competitions, but as I have all monthly competition entries on file, you may if you wish, let me know the title of your entry and which Monthly Competition it was in and I will take PDIs and digital copies of prints from my files. If you use this service please do so by email and do it early so that I can confirm with you that I have it before the closing night.
If you have been kind enough to leave a print with Rick for the exhibition this summer and you would like that print in Print of the Year, again let me know and I will check with Rick. Provided we can locate it I will take it from there and return to Rick after the Presentation Night. Otherwise speak with Rick directly and borrow your print back.
As a final word of advice on Image of the Year, it might seem obvious to enter your best placed images from Monthly Competitions. But don’t assume that if your image didn’t do brilliantly in the Monthly Competition that it won’t do well here. Results often surprise us. Apart from the fact that judges naturally vary in why they appreciate an image, very often a judge will take account of how well they think it satisfies the theme, or how well the photographer has approached the theme. Themes mean nothing here, so that superb image you took but the judge just didn’t get it; now is your chance to give it a second go.
Chairman’s Cup Portrait Print Competition
Very simple, so long as you know:
You may enter a maximum of two images
Prints only.
Image must be a portrait that includes a human subject or subjects.
Do not send entries to me (or anyone else) – just bring them along to Presentation Night, put them up on the display boards (so best make sure they are suitably mounted) and the judge will judge them on the night and prize awarded.
Web Gallery
As members web galleries are the only other remaining competition this season and results are also reported on the Presentation Night, I’ll give it a quick mention, but I think this has been well communicated elsewhere.
Nine images for your web gallery, to the webmaster, Steve Gray at webmasters.gpg@gmail.com.
Closing date THIS THURSDAY 28th March 2024.
Good luck to all.
